ASTs haven't been supported in hardware since VAX -- Alpha put them into 
PALcode, Itanium into SWIS code. And yet OpenVMS users on Alpha,
Itanium (and in the future, x86) can continue to successfully use this
handy OpenVMS feature, which still behaves the same as it did on VAX.
