"User programs" used in a very loose definition. User, as opposed to the 
kernel when dealing with hardware. User, as meaning programs running 
under an operating system that provides some services.

I don't know Javascript, so I can't really comment.

I know that some people and languages are not too compatible with ASTs 
and similar solutions. Personally I just love them. Unix signals are the 
same story, but the way signals work just upsets me, since they are so 
broken and limited compared to ASTs.
