One I've just come across recently in the Linux world (but
unfortunately not on OS X or other Unix-based systems):

sort -h, --human-numeric-sort
           compare human readable numbers (e.g., 2K 1G)

This is particularly useful for the output of 'du':

du -h | sort -h
