The guys I work with who use HDF were the first people to move off of VMS
and onto Unix systems in the early nineties, because their whole goal in
life was to get as much floating point performance as possible. I think
that is probably typical of that market.
I think that train left the station 25 years or so ago.
Much more recent has been the cleanout of the OpenSSH code, in which VMS
support was one of the first things to go.
