Do the apps even know their data resides on a SAN ? DoN't applications
simply see an ODS2 or ODS-5 file system even if behind the scenes VMS
does other stuff (SAN, DECnet, NFS etc) ?

If the host hardware does have a SAN attached, should the host hardware
give the emulated VAX or Alpha direct access to the SAN or should it
simply translate simple disk commands from the VAX/Alpha into the ones
required to talk to the hardware SAN ?

Don't even modern VM systems like VMware provide a level of device
abstraction to the instances (which aren't even emulated) ?
