Actually, no longer the case. Not because of distance limitation of
coax, but because of capacity limitations.

Docsis 3.0 generally bonds 4 channels for download, each roughly 40mbps.
So 160mbps capacity for download on a single coax (3.0 allows up to 8
channels to be bonded).

You can only cram so many customers on a 160mbps capacity when
advertised speeds are in the 25 to 100mbps service at retail.

So the cablecos have been reducing footprint of their coax segments in
order to reduce average number of customers per coax segment.
