[Info-vax] storing boot flags in the console

I've just upgraded a system disk from 7.3-2 to 8.4 (finally!) and just 
noticed something.  I specified the appropriate flags to boot into a 
non-zero system root.  However, I'm sure that, in the past, I just typed 
"BOOT" at the console prompt and it booted into the intended non-zero 
system root.  Are the boot flags stored in the console and used until 
overridden?
