I'm not using 8.4, but I doubt there will be any differences.

On Alpha from the SRM prompt many things can be seen and set.  What 
you're looking for is the default boot device.  I'm not sure of the 
exact name, anc won't take my system down to check.  At the SRM prompt 
just type (I believe) SHOW
