Philip, I have not read everything in thread. (disclaimer).

Have you tried to boot the conventional DECWindows environment instead
of CDE ?

Have you tried disabling decwindows at boot, then telnet to the host and
manually execute the decw$startup procedures with set verify on to see
where it hangs ?


Also, in your autogen parameters look at any value that is set
explicitely as opposed to MIN_chocolate=200

Your upgrade procedure may have changed some parameters but your autogen
params may have reverted to pre 8.4 values when running it after the
upgrade.
