[Info-vax] 8.4 and DECwindows CDE login box not coming up

Normally I do real work at a satellite in my attic, which I boot when I
need it. The bootservers are in the cellar. All have graphics cards,
and two have monitors connected up. I had been using the node which is
now at 8.4, since it is the most powerful and has the most memory. As a
replacement, I plugged a mouse into another node, replaced the keyboard
with one which has a bit better feel, and logged into CDE. This is a
PWS 600au, at 7.3-2, with 512 MB as opposed to the XP1000 with 2 GB on
the 8.4 node. It is the bootserver for the satellite (a DS10 with 768
MB), where DECwindows runs fine. I've never done anything other than
see the login box come up on this node, hence no fiddling, no tuning, no
problems. And I do remember running CDE fine even on a DEC300LX with 48
MB.

I really, really, really can't imagine that DECwindows demands changed
so much from 7.3-2 to 8.4 and even if they did, it seems that the XP1000
is more than powerful enough. Also, some resource problem would lead to
things just not working, rather than a process looping, right?

I suspect it is some bug, which of course might not always show up.

Does anyone know the details of the Open3D problem which EPLAN
mentioned? Could that be related to my problem?
