I was using DFU to fast-delete the departed users' directories that had tens of thousands of emails in them. Just to clear space.
Will run it against the disk for other checks. The disk did pass an overnight ANAL/DISK/READ pass a few weeks ago.
By cleaning up (MAIL> SET FILE badusersMAIL.MAI) on most of the POP3 users, and purging/deleting everything older than 30 days (the clients are supposed to be set to 14 day delete or when client put message in the trash) we removed some 90,000 mail files, most from three users. So far today the load on the server seems to be about 40% of what we saw previously this week.
Thanks for the hints; I took a clue-bat to myself for forgetting the too-many-files-in-directories issues with older VMS versions.
