Thank you. That worked.

Unfortunately it looks like this code has some serious problems. Are you
running it on VAX?

Dired mode starts up ok (everything is terribly slow) but when I select a
directory or file from the list Emacs crashes with a long traceback
starting with

Bunch of other messages but I am typing this in manually since I don't know
how to capture the output.
