I'm not a Emacs user, so I didn't try much. I guess what you are doing
is ^X^F and then space:

OK, I try to find what's wrong, here.

On the other hand, what means terribly slow, does emacs prints a line,
pauses and then prints then next one? If that is what you see, it may be
related to the baud rate of the terminal. Do a SHOW TERMINAL and check
what ist prints after "Input" and "Output". Try a SET TERMINAL/AUTO and
see if that increases the baud rate and improves the speed.
