Depending on which terminal emulator I use (xterm, rxvt, putty) it is
either VT100 or VT400_type

I can see from SHOW TERM, VMS does not know the terminal size before SET
TERM/INQ but it does after a SET TERM/INQ. It is listed in the output.

There may be but this seems increasingly irrelevant since the copy we have
crashes badly on basic stuff.
