Ok I understand you now. But ^x^f is not dired mode. When you type
control xf it will complete filenames. Dired mode is an edit of the
directory. It does not do completion. It allows you to navigate up and
down, make new directories or files, and delete files or directories.

I am not totally surprised they put all that in the same module but
functionally finding a file (^x^f) is a lot different than meta-x dired.

Sounds like you are tracking things down pretty well.
