^X^F prompts in the minibuffer with "Find file: ..." and shows the 
directory path, and expects you to complete it with the filename. 
Pressing space (at least here), just insers a space. Maybe VMS code 
behaves differently. After all, spaces are perfectly valid in filenames 
in Unix... Pressing '?' should give you a completion list in a buffer. 
TAB should expand the filename as far as possible. If not a single 
character can be expanded, it will behave the same as '?'.
