With any complex software package, it's usually worth spending some
time discussing it with some other folks, just to bounce some ideas and
alternatives around. More than a few places do this of course, though
the context ranges from lunch discussions to detailed specs and formal
design reviews of planned changes. Tactical. What gets discussed and
reviewed somewhat less often is a look at what's already in place, both
in terms of reducing short- and long-term maintenance costs, and in
terms of how the current code fits into the longer-term goals for the
package and the platform. Strategic.
