I'd hope that advancing the pointer to the end of the user data and 
writing would be sufficient.

Blocks and the whole related morass is baggage secondary to addressing 
limitations of the that particular non-volatile storage devices and 
buses.

That the design is user-visible and as endemic in application code is 
going to mean a century of effort to expunge it all, if (when?) 
byte-addressable storage becomes commonplace.
