Maybe you're simply inured?   All the application cares about is the 
byte count.   What it wrote out, and what it wants back.   All you've 
been pointing to — all of it correct — is the chaff and chunder of an 
existing and limited storage design, and not something that the 
application can or should care about.   But due to a half-century of 
sector-addressable storage and its associated limitations, it's the 
excrement that many of us have to deal with.  This when we're working 
with OpenVMS or other similar systems which present these details to 
the application developers and that don't seek abstractions.
