Sharding is common but that requires nothing from the database.
MariaDB and MySQL could do sharding on VMS out of the box
(if there are any VMS customers left with enough VMS systems
to make it relevant).
MySQL Cluster is really a transparent & automated version of
the same sharding concept.
Galera Cluster is a third party addon that provides
active-active clustering using a replication model to
both MySQL and MariaDB.
That is what I am aware of.
