   Do you mean like the following recent innovations?

ALP $ unzip
UnZip 5.52 of 28 February 2005, by Info-ZIP. For more
details see: unzip -v.

Usage: unzip [-Z] [-opts[modifiers]] file[.zip] [list] [-x xlist] [-d exdir]
  Default action is to extract files in list, except those in xlist, to exdir;
  file[.zip] may be a wildcard.  "-Z" => ZipInfo mode (`unzip "-Z"' for usage).
=> define foreign command symbol in LOGIN.COM:  $ unzip :== $dev:[dir]unzip.exe
[...]

ALP $ zip
Copyright (c) 1990-2006 Info-ZIP - Type 'zip "-L"' for software license.
Zip 2.32 (June 19th 2006). Usage: (zip :== $ dev:[dir]zip_cli.exe)
[...]

   Or are those too well hidden? I'll skip the usual lecture
on how widely available the Info-ZIP documentation is, and
how helpful it would have been to see which version of the
program was being used.

   I know what you mean. Sometimes it's almost as hard as
getting people to read the documentation which is readily
available.
