Actually quite often business separation means preparing for a sale. They can sale "desktops and printers" part of the company (HP for now) to concentrate efforts on a more profit enterprise sector (like IBM did with Lenovo). These layoffs may be another phase of that preparation to bring HP in a more good-looking shape for potential buyers.
