And going back further than LD disks, it's always been possible to use
group mounted disks and group logical names.

In fact, take it back to V4.0 and judicious use of group logicals in
conjunction with group level privileges would allow quite nice
separation of multiple test and development environments on a single
machine.  An early form of sandboxing without the need for expensive
mainframe hardware :-)
