Yep, Randy's credit, being the CIO of Walmart, Dell, HP and now
GM is a pretty impressive resume.
While at HP Consulting, I was part of a large Tech Services group
(informal nickname for us was mini-Mott's :-)) that was selected
to review the internal IT plans from Randy's Planning Group and
then assist marketing HP's internal IT transformation from 85 WW
DC's to 6 based in the US to external Customers.
Key to any CIO driving this amount of change is whether the CEO
will really back the CIO up because there are some really tough
decisions to make. If Mark Hurd had not told the various BU VP's
to get on board with Randy's plans or leave the company, then the
whole plan would have collapsed. Imagine telling EMEA, SA,
Australian and AP VP's of any company that all their internal
Sales, Marketing, Revenue and other prod apps will be hosted in
the US....
Note - it's a bit moot now that the company is broken up and
split off, but there were a lot of uglies associated with the HP
internal IT transformation, so while it kind of worked and they
did some really creative things, it's not an all one big rosy
story.
Bit more background on Randy's principles:
http://www.informationweek.com/strategic-cio/executive-insights-a
nd-innovation/gms-randy-mott-what-i-believe/d/d-id/1141482
"During Randy Mott's 30-plus years in IT, he has developed some
core beliefs. Rely on in-house people rather than outsourcers.
Get data to the right people to help them make more-informed
decisions. Deliver projects faster than before. Streamline and
automate IT operations to free up more money for innovative
work."
And here is quote from the above link I never heard him say at
HP, but I like it -
"He also values systems and applications that can be customized
and integrated with others, one reason he's not a big fan of
cloud services. Embracing cloud software and infrastructure is "a
strategy of how do I get even, not how do I get ahead," Mott
says. "And I think the companies that win in their industries are
the ones that figure out how to get ahead, because getting
competitive advantage takes innovation, it takes creativity, and
you're not going to get that from someone who's going to make
everyone on the planet even."
