I do not believe anyone ever stated VSI was writing a new stack
from scratch.

They knew what the native TCPIP and what the code uglies and
third party issues underneath looked like - remember most of the
folks at VSI are ex-DEC/Compaq OpenVMS Engineering.

Generically speaking - If a separate product is available that is
better than your own and is available to be licensed or out-right
purchased, then the best approach is to license or purchase it
and then integrate it into your solution. 

That's what every OS platform and/or solution provider is doing
today.

Just look at all of the different company products that MS has
licensed and/or purchased over the years.
