I agree, console access is essential, but I need to have network
access. There 7 devices in the rack with serial ports. Found a
Moxa 8 port rs232 tcp server from the usual source. Listed
as "doesn't power up", which turned out to be a simple power
supply fault. The only fly in the ointment was that the Moxa
rj45 pinouts are not compatible with the usual Cisco / Sun
console pinouts. Some consoles here are db9, while others have
RJ45 Sun pinout. To keep it all neat and tidy, wanted to use
standard network pin to pin and Sun console cables. It would have
been a real pain to make them, so located a 16 port rj45 patch
panel, half an hour wiring it up idc in pairs to translate
the pinouts and voila, standard cheap cables finish the job.
We have 1 serial port spare, but Moxa make a 16 port model if we
get stuck. To access, just telnet into the Moxa (password
protected) with a port number...
