PL/1 was just giant, it was the Ada of its day.  Like Ada, lots of 
systems had only a subset of the full language, and most programmers
only understood a subset of it.  But the full PL/1 compiler was enormous
for the era, pushing the technology and the system resources in almost 
every way.
