One use for logicals, out of many.

One really interesting thing are cluster-wide logical names.  They don't 
have to be in the cluster table; they could be in a group table with the 
cluster table as the parent (I wonder if I was the first to think of 
this).  Software running in multiple batch queues across several nodes 
can thus easily communicate.
