On the topic of disk drive security disposal, my sources tell me that Canadian Forces IT folks pull the platters and run a belt sander over them.  You're not going to recovery any of those bits, they are literally dust in the wind.

That seems way more practical than melting them and mixing in radioisotopes.
Seems like a derivative of "every problem looks like a nail when your only tool is a hammer". (We have all these neat toys, let's use them).

I guess it depends on which variable you're optimizing, time or equipment.
