Yes. We do. We have to take responsibility. But we often don't. We
far too often blame the users, or the developers. That usually means
we don't have to think any more about the whole problem. No matter how
bad it gets, how often it blows up, or what the results might be. Or
what we might change or implement or enhance or re-think to try to
avoid the whole mess. Sure, a few folks mess up. But if everybody's
not doing something desirable? We have a problem. Either with the
value and own expectations, or with the implementations and
documentation and APIs and defaults. I've really found areas with the
"blame the user" response — some vendors have raised that to an art
form, along with the "it's a virus" and "did you try rebooting it?"
analogs — to be fruitful areas for investigations and potential changes
and enhancements. Of asking why the problems arise, and on whether
the blame isn't really best on the end-users but better fits on the
tool or platform developers and designers. Maybe even hosting OpenVMS
on Amazon or Azure or Scaleway makes sense for some folks and some
deployments after all, and how do we best get there?
