That's actually a very good comparison.

Very few people use a typewriter these days; they mostly use word
processors instead because what you expect out of the tools to
write your documents has increased dramatically over the last
several decades.

The same does indeed apply to the difference between RMS ISAM files
and a database system. Perhaps thinking about RMS ISAM files having
the comparable functionality of a manual typewriter in a world of
word processors is a good way to look at it.
