Many operate on 100-150% markup. Indeed that was the norm in the 80s and 90s Chicago area market. Firms like Cap Gemini were notorious for quoting a green college grad a salary "based on $35/hr." The kids would tell all their friends they were making $35/hr and gladly work all of the overtime Cap Gemini demanded. Trouble is, they were salaried. Cap Gemini was billing for every hour but the slave wasn't being paid more.

If you hit the hour threshold you would get a $5K bonus. had any of the greenhorns done the math they would have learned the bonus was actually less than minimum wage. Most "consultants" didn't get the bonus. It was a high number of hours and they would either force you to take vacation or bench you before you hit it.

Ya know, this was my thought, and the only reason I contacted the
recruiter. Wanted to see how he'd react to a contact. And I found out,
he ignored it.
