For broken serial ports it sometimes helps if the term emulator
has a mode where it waits for each character to be echoed as
it transmits text.  Not necessarily to verify integrity -
it's ok if it continues if expected character does not arrive
within a second or two, for example - but it amounts to a
rudimentary verification of a full path transfer of each
character.

Slow for long distance connections, but useful for making a
console terminal line, or any connection without adequate
flow control, behave.
