I'm afraid no currently-maintained or future version of Perl will add
back the VAX support I removed four years ago (and it had been quite a
while since I'd done a successful VAX build at that point).  If you're
going to run an ancient, unsupported operating system, I don't think
you'll be too worried about running ancient, unsupported software on it.

I too wish there were a free, non-crippled Alpha emulator available, but
its absence is not really a very good reason to struggle through trying
to support modern software on VAX.
