I don't mind the more frequent licensing but I have the Alpha hardware, my home hobby environment, disks, third party products, compilers, etc so renewing the entire environment every 6 months, or giving up my decade-plus old environment would not be a desirable move.

This downloading of a fresh system image every 180 days appears to be
the main problem, not the 180 day limit.

I wonder if VSI would allow you to export the licence database from
a newly downloaded image into your existing emulator system disk
image so you don't have to build a new system disk image every 6 months ?

Or are time limits built into the supplied emulator as well ?

There's also the lack of hobbyist licences for VAX and Itanium.

I wonder if HPE could hand over the existing hobbyist program to VSI
and allow VSI to run that instead, maybe with a bit more automation
to reduce or eliminate the ongoing manual steps which HPE appear to
carry out ?

Simon.
