I use a FTDI USB adapter for d-rats on Amateur Radio.

As I remember it, I had to get the Windows driver from the FTDI site,
which was tricky because almost none of it was in English.

Then after I got it working, Windows update claimed that it had a newer
official driver. That totally broke using the device.

I do not remember all the mystic rituals that it took for me to the
original FTDI driver back installed, but I have never let Windows update
change that driver since then, and it works solid.

It also may make a difference if the FTDI chip is a real FTDI chip, or
an unlicensed third party clone. A search engine can reveal more
details about that.

If it is a unlicensed third party clone, it may not be possible to get a
working Windows driver because the FTDI software attempts to detect that.
