Pci-e drives will kick that transfer rate along by a huge order of magnitude over SATA too
For example, PCIe 3.0 is 985 MB/s pet lane, that's 15.75 GB/s on a x16 slot
AMD's new Zen 2 570 motherboards already supports pcie-4 and pci-6 was ratified not long ago, which has an astounding throughout of 128 GB/s (using ×16)
Does VMS support PCIe storage devices?
A few years back, we put an 8400 Alpha on Charon and put the storage on a flash drive array and the results were astounding. The I/O was so blazingly fast that it automatically created a CPU resource issue for us because the I/O completed so dam quickly that the bottleneck shifted to CPU resourcing! Even so, our longest running batch job that used to take nearly 22 hours now completed in 40% of the time
