The more I thought about this, which wasn't much, I came to the

If the terminal / emulator highlighted one string, then why not another?
Highly doubtful it was the terminal.
I also cannot imagine the network, wire, or whatever removing the
commands to highlight, consistently.
That leaves SEARCH as the likely culprit. However, it does not have the
problem on my VAX / VMS V7.2 system. So how did it get screwed up on
Alpha 7.3? That is what I find interesting.
