You're right.  I should always do a verify pass.  Going disk to disk has 
me somewhat spoiled.

If you have an optical drive and a CD/DVD distribution disk, you always 
have VMS available.

I usually have spare disks laying around with a VMS installation on them.

I can even for example, take a disk and put it on the AlphaServer 800 
(where save sets are stored), do the restore, then move the disk to the 
VAXstation 4000 system.  Or other similar shenanigans.

Note, I think I've had to replace a VAX system disk one time.  That's 
not so shabby.

I guess I should also note that these are not production systems.  I use 
them for development.
