In a number of years you will not be able to buy 2 TB and smaller disks.

When the new file system was discussed previously it was
indicated that it would be accessed traditionally VMS style
through RMS, so the potential for performance improvements
must be a bit restricted. But I could imagine directories
getting faster.

Besides that then GFS has some features: journaling,
no limits on path length, all characters except NUL
valid in filenames. But again compatibility requirements
may prevent VMS from using those.
