Ponder needing fewer SSDs/HDDs; smaller systems, fewer or no shelves,
fewer bays, less rackspace, etc.
Ignoring the various pitfalls of storage partitioning, it can also be
useful when fewer HDDs/SSDs/bays are available.
NAS boxes being deployed for backups are using 12 TB HDDs throughout,
and most recently with NVMe SSD cache added. Wicked fast.
The ODS-2 and ODS-5 file system designs don't lend themselves to
performance, nor to SSD operations.
For what might be replacing ODS-2 and ODS-5 file systems, GFS+ has been
mentioned.
