Why would anyone assume that?  I have a quite modern SCSI 9 track
that works fine on DEC Hardware, Sun Hardware, PC's and pretty much
everything else I have had reason to try it on.

May  not be as common as it once was but there is still a lot (and
I mean a real lot) of archived 9track data out there.
