Looking at Hanrahan's post that Grant Taylor linked, it appears to
mostly be about implementing a protocol with no flow control,
particularly when the serial interface has no or very limited buffering.
If you're designing something new, it's best to take those as
antipatterns to avoid, rather than using the post as guidance on how to
implement such strategies.
