Oh, yes, that was very popular still in the 80s. At one point I worked at
a hospital whose research department wanted to do fast FFTs, but we were not
allowed to purchase a computer because only the MIS department was allowed
to have computers. So we bought a multiuser word processing system, with
16 terminals. We discarded 15 of the terminals and the multiplexer, put in
a floating point card, got a copy of RT-11 and we were doing realtime
processing of EEG data on our word processor!
