Re: existing Rdb OpenVMS Customers moving to X86-64 ...

Note - Oracle licensing is primarily based on server hardware - not the OS.
Named user is also available.

As a reminder, license costs for Rdb OpenVMS on X86-64 will be 50% of what
they are on Alpha, IA64.

And then there are the normal discounts applied on top of this.

This is because of the Oracle Processor Core Factor (PCF) .. there is a
weighting factor applied to all Oracle licenses (price x PCF) that is based
on your hardware platform.

For most competitive platforms to Oracle (Alpha, Power. IA64 etc.) the
Factor is 1.0

For X86 platforms, the weighting factor is 0.5.

Reference: (slide 23)
https://www.oracle.com/a/ocom/docs/corporate/oracle-software-licensing-basic
s.pdf

Hence, since Oracle licensing and support costs is typically in the hundreds
of thousands USD's for many med-large Customers, the hardware platform they
choose is a really big deal. Often dwarfing the costs of the server
hardware.

Imho, the PCF cost savings is one of the major reasons why many Oracle
Customers flipped from Solaris, AIX and HP-UX to Oracle on Linux/X86-64.
