When managing one or two systems, and with an experienced team familiar
with these tasks, and with the necessary time available, sure.
And we'll still see testing skipped, errors made, dangling dependencies
left, and cases where folks didn't unwind required system parameter
changes. And those parameter settings skew over time.
I know about all of these and other cases, having either made these
mistakes myself, or having identified and resolved these cases created
by other system managers or by product-related developers.
I can't count the number of support calls I've fielded from folks that
thought they could install or uninstall a package, and, well, failed.
Which gets back to better product and better system automation.
Which OpenVMS just isn't good at.
We're discussing this in a thread about debugging startup errors.
Which ~every experienced OpenVMS system manager has stories about.
And which is something that even experienced OpenVMS system managers
should not need nor have to deal with.
