In the 1970s/1980s, manually was acceptable. In the 21st century,
automatically is expected.

Good luck with getting that right 100% of the time in a file
which is also manually edited.

True, but they are used on Linux.

On Linux, init scripts are startup scripts. Even the init scripts
architecture is still a _LOT_ cleaner than what exists in VMS.

I am not using Windows as an example of how things should be done but
as an example of how even Windows has update and package management
functionality that VMS is missing.
