Or you can consider modifying this file-handling code, possibly also 
the app test coverage; fix this version handling locally, within the 
app.

OpenVMS requires various online file operations including version 
management and consistent online backups be managed by the app 
developer, or managed downstream by the system administrator and/or 
support team.

And yes, we don't all have all sources to our apps, or we might lack 
system or app support, so we deal with this mess, same as it's always 
been for the last ~40 years.

ODS-2/ODS-5 file versioning stinks large, but it's better than nothing. 
This in the absence of file change processing and/or reversion support 
and/or more frequent backups, etc.
