Remember the battery situation is just a guess; it seems plausible to me
that the RAID controller might use the cache as scratch space during a
configuration change, but I don't know that.  Surely someone here does.
  So don't rule out that there is some magic incantation for MSA$UTIL
that you haven't guessed yet.

If you do explore the battery route, there are various YouTube videos of
folks cutting into their HP(E) cache battery assemblies and replacing
the batteries.  Cutting is involved because they are glued together and
not made to be serviced.  It looks doable, though I've never done it myself.

You can of course buy batteries.  I don't know if this is the right one
for your system, but it's an example of what's out there:
