I have a Nook e-book reader, originally from Barnes and Noble.

At some point, I was having problems with it. It turns out to run a
specialized version of Android. I found install instructions for an
more ordinary version of Android, which let me download newer
apps, such as new Overdrive.

If they are GNU licensed, then the source has to be available, but
it is a lot of work to go through the specialized parts. Among others,
the new Android, like cell phones, doesn't turn all the way off,
when you turn it off. Otherwise, it is a lot of fun.

I am not sure how hard it would be to get Solaris running on your box.
